MANILA – Rain or Shine Elasto Painters-Philippines suffered a stunning 91-96 loss to Bahrain’s Manama in the Bahrain-Philippines Goodwill Basketball Games on Thursday night in Bahrain.
The loss came as a shocker as it was the first time that a Philippine Basketball Association-based team suffered a defeat at the hands of host team in the annual friendlies.
The Painters did not get the start it wanted as it fell by as much as 10 points in the opening period but the Painters bounced back in the second canto for a 43-38 halftime lead.
The Painters were still on top in the third quarter a 77-70 but Manama came up with a huge rally in the fourth to force a 91-all deadlock on a three-pointer by Hussain Shaker.
A missed call on a goaltending on the shot of Painters’ Jewel Ponferrada followed by four free throws from Mozamel Ameer allowed Manama to escape with the win.
Wayne Chism, who previously played for the Painters, led the way with 18 points, while Shaker and Mohammed Hussain added 17 apiece for Manama.
Eduardo Daquioag finished with 21 points, while Mark Borboran and Dexter Maiquez had 12 and 11 markers, respectively, for the Painters. Veterans Beau Belga and James Yap were held to seven points apiece./PN
