MANILA – Rain or Shine Elasto Painters made it pour on the offensive end to stop the streaking Phoenix Fuel Masters 120-99 in the PBA Philippine Cup on Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Eduardo Daquioag and Negrense James Yap finally got their scoring going with conference-bests 21 and 20 points, respectively, for Painters, which tied Fuel Masters with a 2-2 win-loss slate.

Dexter Maiquez chipped in career-high 18 markers while Chris Tiu and rookie Rey Nambatac contributed 17 and 11 points, respectively, as they played without veterans Raymond Almazan, Jericho Cruz, Anthony Washington, and Jireh Ibanes.

“It’s a total team effort for us,” said Daquioag, who failed to finish off the match due to a minor injury. “Unlike in our previous game, nagkaroon kami ng communication inside the court kaya naka-pull away kami agad noong simula.”

After trailing 5-6 early in the match, Painters unloaded a 14-0 scoring run behind Daquioag, Tiu and Mark Borboran for an 18-5 lead. This widened further to 36-9 with hits from Maiquez, Tiu and Nambatac.

Painters continued with its run in the second frame with consecutive baskets from Yap and Maiquez for a 46-23 lead but Fuel Masters came up with a late run to come to within 40-57 at the half.

Fuel Masters went on to cut the deficit to as low as 16 points but Painters had another scoring run behind Yap and Daquioag to build their largest lead 86-47 on back-to-back treys by Tiu.

Phoenix tried to make its last push in the final quarter with 19 points but Rain or Shine came up with a finishing run from Yap and Maiquez to increase the advantage to 120-93.

Rookie Jason Perkins and Matthew Wright finished with 17 points apiece. Angelo Alolino added 12 while Negrense Jeffrei Chan and Karl Dehesa contributed 11 each for Phoenix./PN
