ILOILO City – The rainy season has commenced, according to the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

It warned of possible flooding and landslides in Western Visayas.

“The region will be rainy due to the southwest monsoon. Be prepared,” said Engr. Oscar Tabada, PagasaVisayas director.

In a weather advisory, Pagasa said the rainy season officially started on May 30.

“The occurrence of widespread rainfall recorded in most Pagasa stations monitored in the last five days under Type 1 Climate confirms the onset of the rainy season,” it read.

Intermittent to continuous rains and thunderstorms associated with the southwest monsoon will continue to affect Metro Manila and the western section of the country, it added.

Ang Type 1 areas or provinces, the western side of the Philippines which includes Dagupan, Laoag, Mindoro na-satisfy na sa criteria, maulan na sila doon,” Tabada explained.

The state weather bureau also projected Western Visayas to have “normal rainfall” from June to August, “below normal” by September and will normalize again by October.

There could be a weak El Niño by November, according to Tabada./PN
