“HAVING a child is not having an extension of who you are. It’s having an opportunity to better the future.”

I remember how my young self was not really looking forward to having children or a family. I was content with being single and simply have myself to worry about. But for some reason upon reaching a certain age, you look forward to having children or family. Perhaps it comes with age. Or maturity begins to sink in.

So how important is having children a opposed to being single or be married with no plans for kids? Hollywood calls this the Jennifer Aniston Syndrome. There were speculations that the reason she and Brad Pitt divorced was because Jen did not see herself having children. Brad, on the other hand, wanted to have them.

I have my personal reasons for this sudden change of heart, for desiring to have children.

The Legacy – At some point you will realize that you are filled with promise and wisdom from God and you want to pass these on to someone. Yes, you can do that with someone unrelated to you but it would be a different fulfillment.

Molding a Future – I look at my life and see how amazing it is that in every decision I make now, I go back to what was instilled in me as a child, how my parents raised me up. With that, I look forward to rearing a person who shall grow up according to instilled principles or values that may be shared for the goodness of society.

Faith, Love – The capacity to believe in the unseen. Having a legacy of faith and impart a belief to someone who could have greater faith than you are. To teach someone about love which springs from an unconditional heart.

These are the reasons why I look forward to having children of my own. But having them is always in God’s perfect time.

If we are given the opportunity to be parents, it is necessary that we impart the right kind of discipline and upbringing to our children.

Section 2 of Republic Act 7610 mandates the “State to provide special protection to children from all forms of abuse, neglect, cruelty, exploitation, and discrimination and other conditionsprejudicial their development; provide sanctions for their commission and carry out a program for prevention and deterrence of and crisis intervention in situations of child abuse, exploitation and discrimination.

“The State shall intervene on behalf of the child when the parent, guardian, teacher or person having care or custody of the child fails or is unable to protect the child against abuse, exploitation and discrimination or when such acts against the child are committed by the said parent, guardian, teacher or person having care and custody of the same.

“The best interests of children shall be the paramount consideration in all actions concerning them, whether undertaken by public or private social welfare institutions, courts of law, administrative authorities, and legislative bodies, consistent with the principle of First Call for Children as enunciated in the United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child.

“Every effort shall be exerted to promote the welfare of children and enhance their opportunities for a useful and happy life.”

Remember: how we raise children is how they become in our society, so the need to impart good values and set good examples cannot be overemphasized./PN
