MANILA – San Miguel Corp president Ramon Ang on Monday denied claims he was backing any contender for speaker of the House of Representatives.

Taguig representative Alan Peter Cayetano earlier said Ang was supporting his rival Marinduque representative Lord Allan Velasco.

“That is untrue. I know all of them, but I’m not supporting anyone in particular,” said Ang in a statement.

The SMC boss said he “never exerted influence or asked for political favors.”

“In fact, he himself can attest to this because he has sought my help many times,” Ang said referring to Cayetano.

“I have always found a way to help him in my personal capacity. And in all those instances, I treated him fairly, and never said no. I always tried to help, as I do with everyone who comes to me. But I’ve never asked him for anything in return.”

The Taguig lawmaker earlier said Velasco’s wife worked as a lobbyist for the Ang and that “resources were” flowing to influence the race in favor of Velasco.

“The resources that are flowing cannot come from yung mag-asawa lang (just the couple),” Cayetano said referring to Velasco and his wife, in an interview with ANC’s “Headstart. “

Ang said he was not influencing the race for the House leadership.

“We think that that race is down to the President’s choice, or who his party chooses. I am not part of that. I don’t think anyone, no matter what they do, can influence the President or Congress,” Ang said.

Velasco has denied any hand in the supposed bribery in an earlier ANC interview. (ABS-CBN News)
