ILOILO City – A sudden rush of water swept away nine college friends having a good time at the foot of Montillano Falls in Barangay Jayubo, Lambunao, Iloilo, killing two of them.
The body of Mica Angela Cornelia, 18, of Barangay Tigbauan, Maasin, Iloilo was found around 7 p.m. on Friday, some two hours after she disappeared.
On the other hand, 19-year-old Renalyn Libuna of Barangay Jayubo was found dead yesterday around 6 a.m. in Barangay Pasig, also in Lambunao.
Cornelia was a third year agriculture student at the West Visayas State University (WVSU) – Lambunao Campus. Libuna was in fourth year.
There were a total of six girls and three boys who bathed at the Montillano Falls, said Chief Inspector Elmer Armada, Lambunao police station chief.
All students of WVSU, they decided to have some fun Friday afternoon after their classes.
The waters were initially calm but it later rained hard, according to the policeman.
The volume of cascading water from the falls increased and swept the students away.
Seven managed to reach higher ground but the water current proved too much for Cornelia and Libuna.
Initial investigation showed that the students were binge drinking before proceeding to Montillano Falls./PN
