Rapper Saweetie’s Met Gala gown inspired by PH flag

THE theme was “American Independence”, but rapper Saweetie didn’t forget to pay homage to her Filipino roots at the 2021 Met Gala by wearing a gown inspired by the Philippine flag.

The 28-year-old artist walked up the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York on Monday, Sept. 13, wearing a sparkling Christian Cowan gown with a long cape, with one train bearing the colors of the Philippine flag, the other the Black American heritage flag.

According to Cowan, a British designer, the outfit features ten million hand-placed crystals, which were draped to adorn Saweetie’s body.

Saweetie was born to a Filipina-Chinese mother and African-American father. She rose to fame for her single Icy Girl in 2017 and has since released chart-topping hits, including Back to the Streets and Best Friend featuring Doja Cat.

Sharing photos of her look on Instagram, Saweetie wrote: “Proud of my heritage!”

Meanwhile, aside from Saweetie, another Filipino-American – young singer Olivia Rodrigo – also made her Met Gala debut this year.

Olivia, who sang the hits drivers license and good 4 u, wore an all-black sheer lace jumpsuit by Yves Saint Laurent.

Often dubbed the “fashion’s biggest night”, the Met Gala is an annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Met’s Costume Institute.

It is usually held every May of the year, but the pandemic forced the Met committee to postpone the star-studded event to this month.(Push)
