P7.5M damage in 213 hectares – OPA
BACOLOD City – Rats attacked rice fields in Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental, the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) said.
A total of 212.95 hectares of plantations in the southern component city were damaged, said OPA head Japhet Masculino.
This happened after green bugs destroyed hundreds of hectares of rice fields in Sipalay and La Carlota cities, also in the south.
According to Masculino, the rat infestation has affected the cropping period December 2017 to January 2018.
As of Feb. 8, the cost of damage has reached P7,469,078.40 – affecting 236 farmers – he added, citing information from the Himamaylan City agriculture office.
Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. already knows about the rat infestation, said Masculino.
The local government has created a crop protection team to hold a survey of all rice plantations to determine the possible presence of rats, the OPA head said.
Moreover, the OPA has advised all rice-producing local governments to conduct an information campaign on rat infestation prevention, said Masculino./PN
