BACOLOD City – Real estate company Megaworld Corp. will finance the construction of the “welcome area” in this capital city, according to Mayor Evelio Leonardia.

Leonardia said this after meeting Megaworld representatives last week.

The welcome area, which will be built along the Bacolod-Silay Airport Access Road, is Leonardia’s idea.

According to the mayor, his “concept is similar to the Las Vegas welcome area” in the United States.

He said the welcome area will “give signal to the world that Bacolod is opening its doors to everybody.”

The “iconic” project will be built on a 6,000-square-meter lot at the boundary of Bacolod and Talisay cities, Leonardia added.

It was earlier proposed that the project will be constructed on a 2,000-square-meter lot at the boundary.

Megaworld owns the P108-million lot property where it had planned to build its Forbes Hill residential district.

Once completed, Megaworld will manage the welcome area, which will have fast-food chains, souvenir shops and comfort rooms.

The project’s groundbreaking will be on June 18 while its inauguration, during the MassKara Festival in October, added Leonardia./PN
