Recognition of exemplary Ilonggos caps off Iloilo City’s Charter Day

ILOILO City – This southern metropolis capped off its 87th Charter Day celebration by recognizing exemplary Ilonggos who have made significant contributions to the community and abroad.

Themed “RISE, Iloilo City: Remarkable Ilonggos Sustaining Excellence at 87”, the celebration highlighted the recognition by the city government of several Ilonggos who have made a mark in their fields locally and internationally.

The “2024 Ten Outstanding Ilonggos of Iloilo City” is an award given to recognize the achievements and contributions of individuals from Iloilo City who have excelled in various fields such as public service, education, business, arts and culture, social work, and more.

These awards honor Ilonggos who have made significant impacts in their respective areas, contributing to the betterment of the community locally and abroad.

The 2024 Ten Outstanding Ilonggos include Vice Admiral Giovanni Carlo J. Bacordo, Erlinda S. Ganzon-Naret, and Engr. Rowen R. Gelonga, Justice Francis H. Jardeleza (Ret.), Dr. Bernadette Jardiolin Madrid, Vice Admiral Alexander P. Pama, Atty. Jose Mari Benjamin Francisco U. Tirol, Dr. Clement Castigador Camposano, Dr. Hazel P. Villa, and Atty. Jobert A. Peñaflorida.

The city government also gave another award for police officers, teachers, and school principals titled “Rising Public Servants Award (RPSA).

Mayor Jerry Treñas said the recognition is a testament to their dedication and impact on the city, embodying the spirit of service and excellence that Iloilo City is known for. 

“Kada isa sa mga awardee naga sulat kamo sang chapter diri sa aton diri syudad nga may impact sa pungsod naton. Salamat gid sa inyo maayo na nabuhat sa aton syudad,” Mayor Jerry Treñas told the awardees during the ceremony on Aug. 23.

“I know all of you who have done so much and who continue to do so much, you also passionately love Iloilo as much as I love her,” said Treñas, as he urged the awardees to ensure that Iloilo City will continue to rise.

The mayor hosted a dinner for the 10 chosen Ilonggos from various fields who were acknowledged for their notable accomplishments and contributions to the Ilonggo community last Aug. 23. The Diamond, and Lifetime Achievement Awards were also given on the same day.

In his recent press briefing, Treñas said the year’s founding day celebration of the city government was considered one of the grandest celebrations.

“We have started with outstanding employees. We are going to have a program for outstanding police officers and also for outstanding teachers aside from the outstanding Ilonggos and lifetime awards,” the mayor stressed.

Iloilo City Charter Day is celebrated every August 25 to commemorate the city’s conversion into a chartered city.

The event marks the passage of Commonwealth Act No. 158, which was signed into law by President Manuel L. Quezon on July 16, 1937, and officially took effect on August 25 of the same year./PN
