Red Cross identifies health issues in 2 Yolanda-hit towns

SAN JOSE, Antique – The Philippine Red Cross is conducting household profiling in two towns of Antique affected by super typhoon “Yolanda.”

The profiling in the municipalities of Belison and Valderrama is part of Red Cross’ vulnerability capacity assessment (VCA).

“There are five barangays in each town of Belison and Valderrama that are recipients of the VCA project,” said Ma. Patricia Isabel Florida, Red Cross Antique Chapter administrator.

Red Cross’ VCA is similar to the geohazard mapping of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau, only it focuses on identification and prevention of various health problems and disaster resiliency of the towns.

The five barangays in Belison are Rombang, Senaha, Salvacion, Concepcion, and Maradiona while in Valderrama, Pandanan, Bugnay, Binag, Burokburok, and Lublob.

Indigenous people are living in some of these barangays.

So far, the health problems identified in Belison are hypertension and increasing mortality while in Valderrama, diarrhea and dengue.

The problems will be referred to the municipal and provincial health offices for action.

Florida said they are hoping that by July, they could start the awareness campaign among households.

Last year, Belison and Valderama were also recipients of Red Cross’ community-based first aid training and community-based disaster risk reduction and management training. (With a report from PNA/PN)
