Refresher refereeing course in Bacolod

TO PROMOTE volleyball in the country, the Negros Federation of Volleyball Enthusiasts, Inc. (NEFVEI) is staging a Refresher Refereeing Course from Aug. 25 to 27 at the Montalbo Volleyball covered court in Bacolod City.

NEFVEI treasurer Jose Montalbo told Buzzer Beater the three-day event will be handled by International Referees Level I Nestor Bello and Yul Benosa.

“Course participants will learn from this event. They will also have the chance to officiate the NEFVEI-organized volleyball tournament,” Montalbo said.

The refresher course will also launch new rules of the game, and will have adequate discussion on practical application of current trends in refereeing techniques.

The event will also present the basic interpretation of the rules.

Deadline of pre-registration will be on July 30.

Interested parties may contact NEFVEi through its e-mail: nefvei2018@gmail.com or through Biboy Calamba at 09209507861.

Renaldo Balkman remains positive that San Miguel Beermen will be defending its championship in the 2018 PBA Commissioner’s Cup despite their struggles in the elimination round.

In an interview after the Beermen’s 94-98 defeat to GlobalPort Batang Pier on Wednesday, the Puerto Rican import said he is positive his team will make a last push in the conference.

“We’re taking it one game at a time. We fell short (against Batang Pier) but fortunately we got four more left,” said Balkman. “With import or without import, you still have to play basketball and you gotta stay focused when you’re out on the court.”

“Kudos to my guys, they still played. GlobalPort, they’’re a great basketball team and they came out with the win, but at the same time, we gotta start winning,” added the former NBA player.

Despite falling to 3-4 and losing a shot at the top two spot after the eliminations, Balkman remains defiant, knowing that as long as San Miguel makes it to the top eight, their title retention bid is still alive.

“Playoffs is playoffs. No matter if you’re number one or number eight, you still got a chance. So even though I know the round robin thing is kinda crazy, we gotta play,” he said.

He added: “You have to beat the team twice, or they gotta beat you once. But we won’t get that far. We’ll be okay going into it though. That’s my word.”
