Region 6’s coronavirus cases exceed 8K

ILOILO City – Confirmed cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Western Visayas have reached 8,220, the Department of Health (DOH) Region 6 reported.

But with 4,528 cases having recovered and 126 fatalities as of yesterday, the region currently has 3,566 active cases.

Cases per day this month are averaging 91 – down from August’s daily average of 136 cases, according to Dr. Jane Juanico, medical officer of DOH-6.

Almost 80 percent of the region’s total confirmed cases were local transmission; the rest were either locally stranded individuals (LSIs), returning overseas Filipinos (ROFs) or Authorized Persons Outside Residence (APORs).

Meanwhile, 182 barangays in 32 municipalities and cities across the region have clustering of cases (two or more confirmed COVID-19 cases recorded during Morbidity Week 37).

The disease can spread from person to person through small droplets from the nose or mouth which are spread when a person with COVID-19 coughs or exhales. These droplets also land on objects and surfaces around the person. Other people then catch COVID-19 by touching these objects or surfaces, then touching their eyes, nose or mouth.

In Aklan, Juanico said, the lone barangay with a clustering of cases was Bakhaw Norte in Kalibo town.

The province of Antique has also one barangay with clustering of cases – Barangay Supa in San Jose de Buenavista town.

In Capiz, 10 barangays from four municipalities have clustering of cases.

Iloilo province, on the other hand, has seven barangays in six municipalities with such clustering while 28 barangays in Iloilo City.

Guimaras is the only province in the region with no clustering of cases as of Morbidity Week 37.
