ILOILO City – Over 400 participants from across Western Visayas gathered for the 2019 Street Styles Summit last week.
The two-day dance workshop opened on the 3rd floor of West Visayas State University’s (WVSU) Hometel Building at 8 a.m. on Feb. 22. Most of its sessions were held at the Ateneo de Iloilo-Sta. Maria Catholic School gym.
The event was “well-represented,” according to Francis Dave Moreno of West Crew, one of the organizers, with participants coming from Iloilo, Antique, Aklan, Capiz, and Negros Occidental.
“At the end of the summit, we are expecting a full understanding of the K-to-12 curriculum in terms of teaching street and hip-hop dance. At the same time, we want to equip the participants with basic and foundational skills of various street dance styles,” Moreno told Panay News.
He added that the dance summit – organized by WVSU-College of PESCAR in cooperation with Coach Mycs Villoso of La Salle Dance Company Street – aims to “promote a sense of community in Region 6” in terms of dance.
Moreno also said they want to connect with the Manila and international dance communities as they bring dance coaches in Iloilo.
Among these coaches were Villoso for Street Syles 101, Moreno for the Ilonggo Swag, James Wong from Move Manila for the locking and popping, Micky Yatar from Baguio City for the party dance and waacking, Edd Vicente of Dancehall Manila for the dancehall and house, Kevin Intal for Choreography 101 and Styles, Alex Teo from Singapore’s Dance People for the groove, Ponce Ballenas for the breaking, and Arif from Singapore’s Dance People for the hip-hop.
Aside from these sessions, a dance showcase was also a part of the summit./PN
