KALIBO, Aklan – A multimillion-peso regional evacuation center in this capital town is near completion.
Designed to be resilient to disasters, the center is being built on a lot donated by the local government in Sitio Bukid Tigayon, Barangay Tigayon, a few meters from Tigayon Hill.
Around 33 evacuee families could fit inside the two-storey structure.
The evacuation center will house an infirmary, material recovery facility, laundry area, pharmacy, and other facilities for temporary shelter.
It will accommodate residents from not only Kalibo but also the neighboring municipalities displaced by disasters.
The P33-million facility will be turned over to the municipal government next month.
Mayor William Lachica said the facility will be inaugurated during the Ati-Atihan Festival.
Aside from the one in this town, eight more regional evacuation centers were being by the Department of Public Works in Highways across Western Visayas.
Locations of other centers are Zarraga and Carles in Iloilo, San Jose in Antique, Roxas City in Capiz, Nueva Valencia in Guimaras, and Bago City, Sagay City and San Carlos City in Negros Occidental.
The project has a total allocation of P310 million. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
