ILOILO City – A total of 55 transient vendors occupying two streets in Passi City during market day every Monday will be relocated in a property on corner Saligumba Street and M. Palmares Street, Passi City to address the traffic congestion around the public market.
“This is one of the many ways to solve traffic congestion. We want to address the traffic problem around the public market especially during Monday and at the same time, we do not want our transient vendors to lose their livelihood. That is why, we thought of this solution to address the problem and still allow them (transient vendors) to sell their products and items in different area,” said Passi City Mayor Stephen Palmares.
The transient vendors were occupying the streets of San Juan and Perfecto near St. William’s Church and Passi I Central School, respectively.
Out of 55 transient vendors, 11 were RTW vendors while 44 were relief goods vendors.
Market-in-charge John Arthur P. Palma met with the transient vendors on July 8 to inform them that the relocation will start on July 15.
“As much as possible that we would want to have a smooth flow of traffic, we could not abandon our transient vendors because Mayor Stephen knew that this is the source of their income,” said Palma.
Palma stressed that the 55 transient vendors part of the first batch of relocatees.
“We will also find areas where to relocate other transient vendors selling along Salvacion and Railway Streets,” said Palma.
“We understand that some of them would say that their customers were used to visit or buy their item from where they were situated, however, we explained to them that we want to provide comfort to our customers and other residents who are passing through these streets,” added Palma.
Meanwhile, apart from relocating transient vendors, the Passi City Government will also place tricycle terminals in one area to further address traffic congestion at public market. (Passi City IO/PN)
