BORACAY Island – Department of Environment and Natural Resources secretary Roy Cimatu has given local officials of the department three days to submit reports and recommendations on the island’s current state.
Aklan Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer (PENRO) Ivene Reyes said the order was given by Cimatu following his recent meeting with the local government unit of Malay, which has the jurisdiction over the tourist island.
Reyes said during Friday’s interview that a report on the state of the island’s solid waste management, drainage system, implementation of the 25+5 easement rule at the beachfront, and land title issues here was expected to be submitted to the DENR head by Monday.
Aside from the local officials of the DENR, some officials from the central office are also in the island to comply with Cimatu’s order.
He said this was to show that the DENR secretary was “genuine on his commitment” to help address environmental problems in the island.
Meanwhile, another commitment expressed by the DENR head is the acquisition of additional four-hectare land for a sanitary landfill in Malay.
“This is to augment the existing four-hectare landfill in Barangay Kabulihan and to help address the garbage problem in Boracay,” said Reyes.
Reyes likewise stressed that the newly reactivated Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) also aimed to strengthen DENR’s presence here.
Boracay CENRO was abolished due to the reorganization of DENR in the past year.
He said it would not just benefit the island and the town of Malay, but “it will also cater to the people of Buruanga, Nabas, Ibajay and Tangalan.”
The reactivated CENRO Boracay office with 32 deployed staff will be headed by Forester Jonne Adaniel, Reyes said. (PNA)
