MANILA – Sen. Grace Poe urged public utility companies to help restore power in areas severely affected by typhoon “Nina”.
According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), a total of 114 areas in Regions IV-A (Calabarzon), IV-B (Mimaropa) and V have experienced power interruptions since Dec. 25.
Eleven power lines in the said regions are still cut off, NDRRMC said.
“The much-needed assistance from companies such as Meralco, PLDT, Smart and Globe is crucial to help restore power in affected areas and aid the government in extending relief,” Poe said.
She added that the restoration of power in typhoon-hit areas is “vital” in reaching out to family members and friends.
The chairwoman of the public services panel also encouraged public utility companies to make this a corporate social responsibility effort.
The NDRRMC said that “Nina” also disrupted communication services in many provinces.
The Department of Energy and the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines have vowed to restore power in areas left without electricity.
The government has already extended P7 million worth of aid to typhoon victims./PN
