ILOILO City – Western Visayas experienced a tranquil start to the 2024 – 2005 academic year, with no incidents reported during the reopening of schools, according to law enforcement officials.

In a statement to Panay News, Police Lieutenant Colonel Arnel Solis, spokesperson for the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6), confirmed the peaceful start, attributing it to the extensive security measures put in place.

“Approximately 2,200 personnel, including officers at police assistance desks, foot patrols, and mobile patrols, were deployed to ensure the safety of students on the first day back,” said Solis.

The deployment aimed to provide a secure environment for the students across the region.

In Iloilo City, similar sentiments were echoed by the local police department.

Police Major Shella Mae Sangrines, spokesperson for the Iloilo City Police Office, expressed relief at the orderly conduct during the school openings. She noted that police officers were stationed early in the morning at major educational institutions and surrounding areas to maintain order and provide assistance as needed.

Sangrines emphasized the proactive steps taken to enhance safety, including the establishment of police assistance desks to facilitate easier reporting of complaints or requests for help from students, teachers, and school heads.

“The presence of police is crucial but not sufficient on its own, which is why we’ve also coordinated with the Iloilo City Traffic and Transportation Management Office to manage road safety for pedestrians,” she added.

The police remain vigilant in their patrols, particularly with the onset of the rainy season and increased vehicle traffic during school drop-off and pick-up times./PN
