KALIBO, Aklan – Several hydropower projects in the hinterland town of Libacao, Aklan are planned to be revived.
Engineer Gary Gaylan, Libacao mayor Charito Navarosa’s technical consultant, said two companies have conducted a series of surveys in the town this month to check the viability of the dam projects.
Libacao, a third-class municipality with 24 villages, is one of the areas where the Aklan River flows.
“One of the companies is the Sunwest Construction and Development Corp. Another is a foreign company [but] we could not divulge the name yet as their explorations are still ongoing,” said Gaylan.
Sunwest is planning to build four dams – two of which would have a power production of 10 megawatts while the other two, five megawatts.
The other company, on the other hand, is eyeing to install a 100-megawatt hydropower dam in the upstream areas in Libacao.
“A group of Canadian consultants and engineers was sent by the foreign company recently to conduct the exploration in Libacao. We anticipate that their findings maybe release anytime soon,” Gaylan added.
In 2006, the local government of Libacao signed a memorandum of agreement with the Tri Energy Development and Consultancy, Inc. and the California Energy International Ltd. to build hydropower plants in the town.
