ILOILO City – Operators of boardinghouses, hotels, motel and similar establishments were urged to be more rigorous in checking the identities of clients.
They should ask for the clients’ identification cards, said Atty. Hernando Galvez, city administrator.
The ID check was proposed during the recent meeting of the Iloilo City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC) as a terrorism preemptive measure.
The security cluster committee of the council suggested that an ordinance to this effect be passed.
It counted on the help of Liga ng mga Barangay president Reyland Hervias as council member to introduce such proposal to the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP).
As Liga president, Hervias sits as SP ex-officio member.
For the time being, said Galvez, all that can be done is appeal to the operators of these establishments to demand IDs from clients.
Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog placed the city under red alert status following the arrest of three suspect ted Maute terrorist group members at the port of Iloilo on June 18. The Philippine Army’s 3rd Infantry Division (3ID), on the other hand, emphasized the importance of enhancing the capability of the intelligence community.
“Kun makalusot sa aton maritime security, segurohon naton nga pagtapak nila sa duta sa aton mga isla, ang aton komunidad alerto para mareport agad kag maaksyunan kag ma-cordon sila,” said Major General Jon Aying, 3ID commander.
According to the 3ID, it had not monitored any threat to Western Visayas from the Maute terrorist group.
“Some fear that the terrorists might seek refuge in the Visayas because of the military operations in Mindanao. That would be foolhardy for the terrorists to do. They have no civilian support in Western Visayas. Look at what happened to the Abu Sayyaf in Bohol,” said Aying.
He also described as remote the possibility that the conflict in Marawi City would spill over to Western Visayas.
The Maute group does not have sympathizers in the region, said Aying./PN
