MANILA – Sen. Risa Hontiveros urged the Duterte administration to grant all working women 120 days maternity leave and 30 days extension without pay.
Her bill expanding the maternity leave to four months also allows 30 days of paternity leave.
“An enhanced maternity leave policy at par with international standards and which can truly address the physical, mental and economic burden of pregnancy is long overdue,” Hontiveros said.
The former chief of the Senate health panel said the proposal will entitle female workers adequate paid maternity leave days to fully recover from pregnancy and childbirth, properly care for their child and create a stronger bond between the mother and her child through breastfeeding.
The passage of the bill, she added, does not mean a vacation for mothers.
“Hindi bakasyon ang hinihingi ng mga nanay at kababaihan kundi pagkilala sa kanilang natatanging papel bilang tagapagdala ng buhay sa mundong ito,” Hontiveros said.
“We want women to have the chance to take care of their children and their health and well-being without worrying about the economic costs of being away from employment.”
The Expanded Maternity Leave Law of 2017 hurdled third and final reading in the Upper House. Its counterpart bill in the House of Representatives has yet to be passed./PN
