TOBIAS FORNIER, Antique – A portion of the concrete national highway in Barangay Atiotes here cracked and became impassable due to land subsidence on Monday afternoon, June 19.
Land subsidence is the gradual settling or sudden sinking of the Earth’s surface owing to subsurface movement of earth materials.
The heavy rains brought by Typhoon Fabian who entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Friday, July 16, may have softened and eroded the soil beneath the road.
According to Broderick Train of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO- Antique), village officials made a temporary detour for vehicles.
Last week, Train said, a tree fell in Barangay Igdalaquit due to soil erosion caused by heavy monsoon rains./PN
