ILOILO City – A robber hacked a 60-year-old woman and wounded the victim’s niece in Barangay Parara Sur, Tigbauan, Iloilo.
Baldomera Duga died of hack wounds on the chest and abdomen while being rushed to the district hospital in nearby Guimbal town past midnight yesterday. Her niece Mary Joy Cabugas, 24, survived the attack but her left arm was wounded.
The robbery and hacking happened while Cabugas’ husband was away. A member of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, he was posted in Maasin, Iloilo, according to Senior Inspector Hermogenes Eulatic, Tigbauan police chief.
From what the police gathered from Cabugas, a man covering his face with a cloth entered the house around 12:02 a.m.
The two women were already resting but Duga got up after hearing strange noises. She saw the intruder with a bolo.
According to Eulatic, Duga tried to fend off the robber.
Cabugas rushed to her aunt’s rescue but she was hacked, too, said Eulatic.
The man took Cabugas’ wallet containing an undetermined amount of cash then left.
The robber entered the house by destroying a jalousie window, initial police investigation showed.
It was possible Duga knew the intruder so she was killed, said Eulatic.
The Tigbauan police had not named a suspect as of this writing.
It was raining late Saturday night. A man was seen sitting on a bench outside Duga’s house, said Eulatic./PN
