‘Robbers’ surrender ‘out of fear’

BACOLOD City – Facing robbery charges, three individuals turned themselves in to the police.

The 28-year-old Eugene Sarmiento, 21-year-old Jomar Almonia and his 17-year-old brother were all residents of Barangay Mansilingan.

Sarmiento voluntarily surrendered in the morning of Sept. 2, according to Police Captain Elmer Bonilla, commander of Police Station 7.

Later in the evening, the Almonias also surrendered. They were accompanied by their father and barangay officials.

When questioned by police as to why they surrendered, all three have expressed fear they would be targeted next by vigilantes.

Sarmiento said he might be beheaded, too, referring to last week’s beheading of alleged drug suspect Glenn Paul Castillo in Barangay 38.

Bonilla, meanwhile, said the three were responsible for a robbery two months ago; they broke into a house and stole several appliances.

Both Sarmiento and Almonia were detained at Police Station 7, while the minor was turned over to the city’s Social Development Center./PN
