ILOILO City – Vice President Leni Robredo graced the seminar entitled “Enhancing Local Economy through PPP” held on Sept. 29 to 30 at Diversion 21 Hotel here.
In her keynote speech, Robredo highlighted the importance of public-private partnerships (PPP) to attain progress.
“When I served in Congress, I used the same model that my husband used. I knocked on the doors of private organizations to ask for help for my district. We almost closed the funding gap for elementary school classrooms, not because of the Department of Education, but because of private firms willing to work with us,” she noted.
Robredo also said the government needs the help of the private sector to solve the problems of the country.
“The government can never, ever solve the country’s problems alone despite its huge bureaucracy and the big budget it presents to Congress every year. The tasks of building a nation and addressing our people’s many concerns are just too big. The private sector and public organizations need to be part of the solution,” she added, highlighting that the private sector must only work with government officials with spotless track record.
“There must not be any question of our integrity. There should be openness and transparency. The LGU [local government unit] or government office should be open to change and innovation. In other words, they should have a private sector orientation.”
Meanwhile, Dr. Lulu Loyola of West Visayas State University commended the university’s College of Arts and Sciences Graduate School class in Master in Public Governance for organizing the seminar.
“We are all aware of the vital role of the LGUs in our country’s development as it orchestrates all efforts, programs, projects and activities, able to respond to the needs of their constituents and make the system work,” she said.
Loyola also hopes that with the group of leaders and advocates of good governance, the government’s goal of enhancing the economy and sustainability will be attained.
On his part, Dominador Co who represented Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog during the event, highlighted the programs, services, initiatives, and best practices of the city government made possible through PPP.
“Let me assure you that strong stakeholders’ participation is always in the frontline of good governance in Iloilo City as we continue to cultivate a culture of business opportunity and maintain a progressive socio-economic climate conducive for investments to grow and expand,” he noted.
“Ensuring Local Economy through PPP Seminar” was attended by representatives of various LGUs across the region, business groups, civil society organizations, nongovernment organizations, members of the academe and other interest groups.
It was also made possible by the Association of Schools Administration in the Philippines, Inc. with Panay News as the official print media partner./PN
