ILOILO City – A girl was buried under a rockslide in Barangay Sulangan, Dumangas, Iloilo around 8 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 2.
Keziah Alimas, 19, was doing household chores when falling rocks and loose soil suddenly hit the kitchen of their house located at the foot of a mountain.
According to alias “Den-den”, 14, and Keziah’s younger sister, all family members were in the house when the rockslide occurred.
The Bureau of Fire Protection and Dumangas Municipal Police Station used stone breakers and backhoes to extract the victim from under the rubble.
It took rescuers four hours to recover the body.
The local government of Dumangas gave the family two housing units and relief goods.
Randy Detablan, head of the Dumangas Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, said last week’s heavy rains caused the soil to soften.
Due to the incident, Detablan appealed to those who live in landslide-prone areas to remain vigilant and immediately evacuate if they see signs of a landslide or rockslide./PN
