MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte expressed confidence that the Department of Tourism and its partners in the private sector are prepared for the upcoming 65th Miss Universe competition.
The pageant will be held on Jan. 30 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
“I am equally confident that our host, communities, and the Filipino people would themselves have given and will give each candidate many precious memories to hold on,” Duterte said during the ceremonial presentation of the candidates at Malacañang Palace on Monday.
The 84 delegates earlier participated in pre-pageant activities held in Aklan, Baguio, Batangas, Cebu, Davao, and Vigan.
“It is truly a great honor for us to be sharing you our most beautiful destinations including the rich culture and history behind each of these gems,” said the President.
Duterte, meanwhile, said it was his first time to be in a room full of beautiful women.
“This is [both] privilege and an honor, and I hope that this day will never end,” he said, drawing laughter from the guests.
“And I must say God is really good. Aside from the worries of governance, with all the troubles in the world, when we look at you, we forget the universe, but only you.”
The Philippines has three Miss Universe winners namely, Gloria Diaz in 1969; Margarita Moran in 1974; and Pia Wurtzbach in 2016./PN
