MANILA â President Rodrigo Duterte expressed regret over the rejection of Judy Taguiwalo as Social Welfare secretary.
Thirteen of the 24-member Commission on Appointments did not approve Taguiwaloâs appointment during the Aug. 16 voting.
âThe voting was secret. Pero sayang. She was really ⌠at saka bright,â said Duterte, who described the University of the Philippines professor as a âworker.â
But the chief executive said he respects the decision of the commission.
âI do not know who voted for and who was against Taguiwalo. And that is the job of Congress as part of the checks and balances in this government,â he said on Monday.
âChecks and balance iyan e, so wala tayong magawa kung i-reject,â he added. âI do not want to attribute or impute something, motive. Itâs a discretion.â
While he has yet to name a replacement, Duterte urged the next Social Welfare secretary to âwork sincerely, earn your keep for the day, (and) do not corrupt the money.â
The President did not say whether or not he was still inclined to nominate or appoint someone linked to the Left.
Taguiwalo was one of those the Communist Party of the Philippines nominated for a position in the Cabinet.
She was the third Duterte appointee to have been rejected by the powerful bicameral body. The other two were Perfecto Yasay Jr. and Regina Paz Lopez for the Foreign Affairs and Environment departments, respectively.
For her part, Taguiwalo did not believe Duterte kept faith with her.
âMr. President, I kept faith with you,â she said during a sendoff ceremony for her at the Department of Social Welfare and Development central office on Tuesday. âNalulungkot lang ako kasi I donât think you kept faith with me at the end.â
âBut still, thank you for allowing me to serve the Filipino people as a member of your Cabinet, for showing the Filipino people ang kaliwa ho, kayang maglingkod ng tapat, ng may malasakit, na walang katiwalian, at may pagmamahal sa bayan,â Taguiwalo said. (With GMA News/PN)
