ILOILO City – The very first Iloilo Rolla Palooza Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Championship on Saturday thrust the increasingly popular sport into the local spotlight – and Ilonggo sports enthusiasts are starting to take notice.

Spearheaded by Rollapalooza, Inc. and Subsport Philippines, in partnership with Iloilo City government, the event saw dozens of both male and female martial artists wrest and tussle on the mat for Rolla gold.

“Turnout was good. The city [even] wants to do more [jiu-jitsu] tournaments because no one was injured,” shares Jojo Uy of Meta Fitness Submission Sport Iloilo, one of the organizers of the event. “A lot had fun and a lot watched and everyone wants to live a healthier lifestyle because of these types of tournaments. Something to look forward to for the progress of Iloilo City.”

William Vincent Tan of Overlimit Cebu emerged on top in the men’s Absolute Open Weight division (Gi) with Subsport-Atos Jiu-jiuJitsu’s Leroy Fernandez Jr. claiming silver. Alexander Hernaez and Diego Taningco, both of ICS-Overlimit, shared the bronze medal.

Lady martial artists also showed their core and stamina, with Jennifer Rama of Deftac San Carlos bagging gold in the women’s Absolute Open Weight division (Gi). Dhyna Rose Gonzaga (ICS-Overlimit) and Rachelle Montanao followed behind Rama, with the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

“With the proper promotion from both public and private sectors jiu-jitsu and the other various martial arts can pick up more steam,” relates Uy, who shares that the Philippines ranks second in Asia, when it comes to jiu-jitsu.

“[This sport can] help Ilonggos remain fit while at the same time becoming more disciplined. Jiu-jitsu and martial arts can also give a better chance for Filipinos to bag medals in the Olympics since we are born fighters and our physique is perfect for it compared to other sports.”

In other results, Fernandez also clinched gold in the Gi-Leve division (under 70kg), with Christopher Ty (silver), Jomarie Alimpoyo (bronze), and Ismael Ibrahim (bronze) trailing behind him. In the Gi-Medio Pesado division (under 88.3kg) William Vincent Tan (gold), Jego Taningco (silver), Christian Hao Causing (bronze), and Jake Abalos (bronze) finished in the Top 4.
