MANILA – University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses’ 1-2 punch Cherry Rondina and Ejiya Laure were hailed for leading their school to the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball finals.
After hauling numerous Most Valuable Players trophies at sand court, the graduating Rondina is set to receive the indoor MVP plum, while Laure emerged as this season’s Rookie of the Year.
The Cebuana Rondina had a solid showing in her final year with 17.7 points per game with a 33.38 spiking percentage and 3.98 digs per set while leading UST to the finals for the first time in eight year.
“I’m still thankful na binigyan ako ng blessing ni God. Thank you na rin kasi para na rin ‘yun sa mga tao na nai-inspire ko na kahit maliit lang kami kaya namin,” said Rondina.
Rondina, who became the second UAAP player to claim indoor and beach volleyball MVP at the same season, also claimed the Second Best Open spiker and Best Scorer awards.
Laure, meanwhile, was hailed as this year’s top rookie making her second consecutive Thomasian to win the award after Milena Alessandrini emerged as the top rookie last season.
Laure got the citation after norming 16.4 points per outing and a 35.90-percent accuracy in attacks. Laure also won the First Best Open Spiker plum.
Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles’ Kat Tolentino got the Best Opposite Spiker award, while Madeleine Madayag was hailed as the Second Best Blocker.
National University Lady Bulldogs’ Roselyn Doria was named First Best Blocker while Ilongga Princess Robles was the Best Server. University of the East Lady Warriors’ Kath Arado and Lai Bendong was Best Libero and Best Setter, respectively./PN
