ROXAS City – The city government is mulling to regulate the operation of lambaklad fishing.
Lambaklad is derived from the Kinaray-a words lambat which means net and baklad meaning corral. One of the biggest fish traps in the country, lambaklad using nets and ropes instead of bamboo poles laid down in a deep portion of the sea.
The City Agriculture Office discovered many fisherfolks have been operating using lambaklad.
Mayor Ronnie Dadivas recently called for a meeting with the city council and other stakeholders to discuss and study how to regulate the use of lambaklad to protect the marine resources especially the small fish.
He noted that fisherfolks use small nets in lambaklad fishing that even small fish can be netted and it also poses danger to water vessels.
Joining Dadivas at the online meeting was Dr. Wilfredo L. Campos, Ocean BioLab professor of the University of the Philippines Visayas. He shared his expertise on how to regulate the operation of lambaklad.
Also present during the meeting were Vice Mayor Teresa Almalbis, Councilor Bords Viterbo, Atty. Gary Potato, Herbet Koks Chu, and Rey Magallanes./PN
