ROXAS City – Local prosecutors vowed to ensure everyone’s rights are protected while the Philippines is under a state of emergency.
“The city prosecutors will be the vanguards of your rights,” City Prosecutor Erwin Ignacio told a news conference.
President Rodrigo Duterte declared a state of national emergency on account of lawless violence after a bombing in Davao City.
The extraordinary presidential power prompts the armed forces to help the police in internal security operations.
The City Prosecutor’s Office dispelled apprehensions and fears over the declaration.
“I just want to emphasize that the declaration was meant to put the police officers, with the help of the army, [on] heightened [alert],” Ignacio said.
The proclamation aims to discourage possible terrorist attacks and reduce crimes, said the prosecutor.
Still, “due regard to the fundamental civil and political rights of our citizens must be observed,” Ignacio stressed.
Asked to assess the current security operations, he said, “Perhaps we feel more secure now.”
Senior Superintendent Samuel Nacion, Capiz police director, called on the public to cooperate with law enforcers manning checkpoints.
“This is intended not to delay the motorists but to secure everyone,” said Nacion.
Police and military personnel are also enhancing visibility in vital installations, economic key points and areas of convergence. (PIA/PN)
