‘Run Negros Run’ revival mulled

BACOLOD City – “Run Negros Run” may be revived this year.

It can complement Negros Occidental’s celebration of Cinco de Noviembre, said Angel “Nonong” Verdeflor, Negros Occidental Provincial Sports coordinator.

He will present the plan to Gov. Alfredo G. Marañon Jr.

Founded almost 35 years ago, “Run Negros Run” was a 42-kilometer individual marathon from north to south of the province.

Eriberto Diaz of Bago City was the first to win the individual event. He later joined the famous Boston Marathon in the US.

“Run Negros Run” produced many marathoners in the likes of Diaz, the late Rodolfo Rizalde, a native of Ajuy, Iloilo who settled in Negros, and now Supt. Alex Muñoz.

Verdeflor said the project was the brainchild of the late ambassador Roberto S. Benedicto.

He expects about 30 to 35 teams to join the famous relay marathon.

“Gov. Marañon may bankroll this project until we can get corporate sponsors,” Verdeflor said./PN
