WE FIRST wrote of Writing History in Our Streets in our column way back on May 5, 2015.  It was our idea of challenge for Barangay Kapitanes to enrich our culture and history by putting up historical markers of concrete or other permanent materials on road corners or in other conspicuous sites in their barangay and give historical information on public figures or events honored by our street names.

With the developments that we see in Iloilo today as a growing trade center and vibrant tourism destination and conference venue, we sought the cooperation of the History Department of A. Mirasol Memorial School, a public high school here in Mandurriao, to launch now Writing History in our Streets.

We are glad that our High School Principal at A. Mirasol Memorial School, Mrs. Mila P. Engalgado, has endorsed the project and designated their history teacher, Ms. Annaliza M. Padernal, to coordinate with us by assigning her students to gather historical data on the street names to be imprinted in markers that we will install on the roadside.

In Mandurriao district, we are starting with this project for Quirico Abeto Street in front of the Western Visayas Medical Center by forming a Writing History in our Streets Committee with Arsenio J. Garbanto Jr., punong barangay, as chairman; then Annaliza M. Padernal, Romeo Escalona and Johnny Novera as members.

Revised and updated data we have gathered on the subject of our street sign for Quirico Abeto Street in Mandurriao is shown below:

QUIRICO ABETO STREET

This 4-lane avenue named after a native son of Mandurriao runs Eastward from Onate Street  bordering Mandurriao District Plaza, and then pass in front of Western Visayas Medical Center towards Megaworld’s Iloilo Business Park and cross to Sen. Benigno Aquino Jr. Avenue up to Mandurriao-Jaro Bridge in Barangay Taft North connecting to Jaro District.

The Hon. Quirico Abeto served as Municipal President of Iloilo, CFI Judge in the City of Manila, and later Secretary of Justice. He died in a plane crash at Mt. Baco in Mindoro province on a flight from Iloilo to Manila while serving later as Technical Assistant to the President of the Philippines. He was 79 years old.

Our plan, after finishing with Quirico Abeto Street above and making it as example to other barangays, is to consider other streets in Mandurriao district, propose this project of Writing History in our Streets, and form new committees chaired by the punong barangay of the area, with History teacher Ms. Padernal, Mr. Escalona and ourself again to complete the team.

Perhaps we can move later to other districts and introduce this project of Writing History in our Streets when we finish with Mandurriao. Wish us luck folks. (For comments or reactions, please e-mail to  jnoveracompany@yahoo.com)/PN
