WE ARE pleased to report that the barangay council of Quirico Abeto in Mandurriao district, with Punong Barangay Arsenio J. Gabanto Jr. presiding, unanimously confirmed in their meeting last Sunday to construct the first Writing History in our Streets marker right in front of their barangay hall beside the Western Visayas Medical Center.
The honorable members of the council are Ramon S. Amoroso Sr., Eufela C. Bero, Noni R. Conde, Jose A. Hiponia, Eduardo O. Lara, Meryl G. Laza, and Rodolfo G. Lorca Jr., with Marina S. Aquito as barangay secretary.
We recommend a more permanent marker or signage made of concrete slab or iron sheet with steel frame or other strong materials on which may be written, etched or engraved the identity or history of the person or event honored by the street name. We are for uniformity of the markers because of our plan to introduce the same to other districts of the city.
The next marker we are scheduled to put up will be for Roman Mapa Street in Mandurriao. We were informed by Kapitan Manuel J. Solinap Jr. of Barangay Airport that has jurisdiction on the street that they have now a ready site for the marker. We would like, however, to ask them to hold on for a few days the construction after the first marker on Quirico Abeto Street is finished, as we would like it as model for other streets.
We wish to have uniformity of design in all areas where the markers may be installed. Besides, we would like to confirm first with Kapitan Solinap the biographical data we have gathered on the street honouree before we can finalize it.
We find many interesting facts on the history of many of our streets. There are, however, streets with no satisfactory data or records available and some barangay kapitanes do not have knowledge either of the history of their streets. We wish some old residents can come out to help us.
Iloilo City will host another meeting of the ASEAN or the Association of Southeast Asian Nations from April 24 to 29, 2017. Prior to this, the delegates are scheduled to have a study visit in Guimaras from April 17 to 21, 2017. We also hosted two meetings of the association last month.
Our City Tourism Office is conducting a city tour again for the delegates. We wish we can show our guests, even if indirectly, the expansion of our city especially along our major roads to the Iloilo International Airport as well as ourcircumferential road that opened new areas for business expansion in our city. It will not be bad if they can coordinate with our Department of Trade and Industry to give assistance to new business locators. Do we have such a service?
One thing, however, that happened after our road widening is that we left many electric posts on the roadway; these obstruct traffic. They must be re-located to the new sidewalks. This is especially found on P. Mapa Street from Madurriao Plaza going towards Megaword; on Oñate Street also from Mandurriao Plaza passing in front of the public market southward to Forest Lake Memorial Park; and on Guzman Street going westward to Barangay Jibao-an, which is the main route to the western towns of San Miguel, Alimodian and Leon in Iloilo province.
Not only electric posts; there are also two roads in Mandurriao which have not been repaired for decades even if we can see many other streets in the city paved again and again. We refer to Mejorada Street passing behind Mandurriao church and Benedicto Street in front of the governor’s residence in Barangay Pale, which are regular routes of passenger jeepneys to NHA Village in Mandurriao. Why are they not being repaired while other streets in Iloilo are being paved again and again even if they are not damaged? (For comments or re-actions, please e-mail to jnoveracompany@yahoo.com)/PN
