ROXAS City – This year’s CAPIZtahan is much anticipated with Sadsad Capiz serving as highlight, culminating in the street that Capiceños equate with a grand parade.

During the Sadsad, people are expected to flock the major streets of Roxas City to watch the burst of colors on performers dancing in lively beat of drums.

The Sadsad Capiz, though honoring the Santo Niño, is unlike the Ati-atihan and Dinagyang festivals that have tribal and pagan origins.

“Sadsad Capiz is a showcase of Capiceños’ rich and vibrant cultural heritage,” said Gov. Antonio del Rosario, adding that: “It’s our way of thanking God Almighty for the all the nature’s bounties we received from Him.”

During the Sadsad Capiz, 18 contingents representing the province’s 16 towns, lone city of Roxas and a school will perform from Day 1 until the competition proper on April 23.

The competing groups are divided into two clusters with the municipalities of Ivisan, Panay, Pontevedra, Tapaz, Dumarao, Sapian, Maayon, and Cuartero composing Cluster 1. They are scheduled to perform on April 21 at 3 p.m.

Ivisan town characterizes kataw (mermaid) and syokoy (merman). Panay depicts Spanish soldiers. Pontevedra prides herself with alimango (crabs) and pasayan (shrimps). Tapaz showcases the Binukot (secluded priced young woman); Sapian animates pispis (birds); Maayon romances with diwata (fairy); and Cuartero twists like bawa (snake)

Cluster 2, including the towns of Sigma, Jamindan, Dao, Pilar, President Roxas, and Mambusao, and the city of Roxas will perform on April 22.

Spectators will be mesmerized with Sigma dancing in rhythms or style of Warriors. Dao is fictionalizing the dwendes (dwarfs); the giant bird of Panitan; the enchanting engkantada (fairy) of Pilar; and the bukay nga lingganay (white bell) of President Roxas.

Contingents will out-perform each other in vying the top prize of P50,000. Runner-up will receive P30,000, and P30,000 for third place.

Ten consolation winners will receive P10,000.

The provincial government, aside from the prizes, is giving P75, 000 to all participating groups. (Capiz Aksyon News Center/PN)
