SAGAY CITY, Negros Occidental – Sagay City FC reigned supreme in the 2nd Marañon Youth Cup via a 2-1 victory over the STI-West Negros University in the gold medal match at the SNHS football ground here.
Conversions from Ryan Monares and Rohderick Rodriguez were all Sagay City FC needed to beat STI -West Negros, which got into the scoring column courtesy of Zacharry Lacson.
Sagay City FC’s Shiorenel Baril was hailed as the tournament’s Most Valuable Players while his teammate Japeth Mermida took home the Best Defender citation.
STI-West Negros’ Chester Alipoon got the top-scorer award with four goals under his name while Arnulfo Urbon and Alexander Realino won the best midfielder and goalkeeper, respectively.
Ateneo de Manila High School Blue Eaglets, meanwhile, settled for a third place finish after beating Ilonggo Young Booters FC of Barotac Nuevo by a score of 2-0 on Wednesday.
In the consolation plate competition, Central Philippine University Golden Lions defeated Sigay FC by a 2-0 scoreline behind conversions from Jill Sander Pillora and Reije Mikhael Rafols.
A total of nine teams, made up of school varsity and local amateur clubs, participated in the competition. It started in a two-group elimination phase where qualified teams headed into the knockouts starting with the quarterfinals until the ultimate decider.
The 2019 Marañon Youth Cup was the second edition of the tournament hosted by Sagay City, Negros Occidental and is founded by Sagay City’s Mayor Alfredo “Thirdy” D. Marañon III with the help of Ceres-Negros FC./PN
