BACOLOD City – Coffee farmers in Barangay Bunga, Salvador Benedicto, Negros Occidental received a P1-million coffee processing facility from the Department of Agriculture (DA).
The facility included seven coffee depulpers, a dehuller, a moisture meter, a drier, among others.
The DA turned over the facility, through the Philippine Center for Postharvest Development and Mechanization, to the Integrated Social Forestry (ISF) Federation of Salvador Benedicto, which comprises seven ISF associations.
Aside from rice, the government is pushing for the production of coffee and cacao to address poverty among farmers, said DA regional director Joyce Wendam.
Coffee may be planted in areas where rice and other crops do not flourish, Wendam said.
Interested farmers may request in writing for cacao and coffee seedlings, which may be taken from a mechanized nursery in Negros Oriental and delivered to the farmers for free, said the DA official.
The turnover and inauguration of the coffee processing facility was held on Oct. 27./PN
