Salesman faces raps for fake robbery report

ILOILO – A robbery incident initially reported in Tubungan town has been exposed as a fabricated claim, leading authorities to prepare criminal charges against the salesman who filed the false report.

On April 3, Tubungan Municipal Police Station (MPS) responded to a report from the Leon MPS about a robbery involving a driver and a salesman. The two men claimed they were robbed by two masked individuals at gunpoint in Barangay Teniente Benito, Tubungan. The alleged suspects were said to have stolen P58,300 in cash.

The salesman, identified as alias “Rem,” and his driver alias “RJ” stated that the robbery took place while they were traveling from Guimbal to Leon.

However, an investigation quickly uncovered discrepancies in their statements. Witnesses, along with the driver himself, contradicted the salesman’s account of events, and evidence suggested that no robbery had taken place at the time or location indicated.

As a result, police have confirmed that the robbery was a fabrication, and charges will be filed against Rem for submitting a false report to the authorities.

Police Colonel Bayani M. Razalan, director of the Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO), commended the Tubungan MPS for their thorough investigation, emphasizing that making false reports not only wastes police resources but also undermines public trust in the justice system.

“The individuals who choose to fabricate incidents will face legal consequences. It’s a reminder to everyone that honesty in reporting is crucial to upholding justice,” Razalan said.

The IPPO reminded the public anew of the importance of providing accurate information to law enforcement, as false reports can lead to serious legal penalties./PN
