SHOWCASING faith and culture through a dance performance has become a staple during Ilonggo celebrations.
And the Iloilo Paraw Regatta – the oldest sailing event in Asia – is no exception with “Sinamba sa Regatta.”
This year’s music-and-dance competition is anchored on the theme, “Unity Amidst the Waves of Change” – more specifically, it shows how seafaring has influenced the locals.
What will make Sinambas a Regatta this year different is the theme song that should be incorporated in the performances.
Composed by Argiel Resurreccion, the song has Rachel Manero as lyricist and Rhaiza Marie Zamora as interpreter.
Sinamba sa Regatta “disappeared” for two consecutive Paraw Regatta celebrations but the Iloilo Paraw Regatta Foundation, Inc. managed to revive it with the help of the local government and sponsors, Chairman Ronald Raymond Sebastian had said.
An opening salvo for Sinamba was held at Festive Walk of the Iloilo Business Park in Mandurriao, Iloilo City. It gave a glimpse of what was in store for spectators during the main competition on Feb. 16 at the Iloilo Esplanade.
The six competing groups are:
* Grupo Versantinos of DBND Production, with Ian Christopher F. Bordon, John Paul de la Cruz and Matthew Balbastro as choreographers
* GruponaSidlangan (Sidlangan Dance Studio) – Linane C. Soncio
* El Via Bayle (Pavia National High School) – Andrew Jalbuna
* GroupoFuerteBaile (Fort San Pedro National High School) – CrisantoSorsano
* RitmoIlonggo de Bailar (The Artistic Team Tag) – Errol Jave Villalobos
* IgbantogBailarines de la Isla (Igbantog Performing Arts of Nueva Valencia National High School, Guimaras) – Beniel Frank Aspero
The groups prepared for months – practicing regardless of the weather just to come up with performances worth watching. Everything must be on point.
The concept is similar to the street dance of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil and Iloilo’s own Dinagyang Festival but the dancers groove to samba.
And the accompanying theme song “speaks of the connection of Ilonggos sa tubig,” says Joan Paulette Mary Libo-on, one of the organizers.
“Kita bal-an, we are seafaring people. Ang aton nga ciudad bordered sia by water, tapos atubang ta ang Guimaras (province), separated kita by water,” she says.
“SinambasaRegatta pays homage to Ilonggo seafarers,” Libo-on adds. “Pero ang iya lang nga method or style of paying homage is in the form of the samba beat, pero ang lyrics (of the theme song) Hiligaynon.”/PN
