MANILA – The San Beda Red Lions clinched the top seed heading into the NCAA Season 92 men’s seniors basketball Final Four with a 80-73 win over the Arellano University Chiefs in their tiebreaker match on Tuesday at the San Juan Arena.
Amiel Cris Soberano led the way with a career-best 26 points, including four triples, for the Red Lions, which clinched the top spot heading into the quarterfinals for the 11th straight season.
Benedict Adamos and Robert Bolick chipped in 14 markers apiece, while Roldan Sara contributed 10 points for the Red Lions, which will have a twice-to-beat advantage against No. 4 seed University of Perpetual Help Altas.
The Chiefs jumped to an early 16-7 lead in the opening quarter behind Michael Canete and Jhon Gumaru, but the Red Lions quickly erased it behind Soberano and Jayvee Mocon to take a 23-22 lead.
The Chiefs pulled to its largest lead at 33-23 early in the second frame but the Red Lions responded with another run behind Adamos and Soberano to snatch a 38-35 halftime edge.
The Red Lions continued its hot shooting in the third canto for a 54-42 advantage on three-pointers by Soberano and Bolick, but the Chiefs leaned on Kraniel Villoria and Allen Enriquez to come to within 60-59.
The Red Lions zoomed to a 68-60 edge early in the final quarter on three straight midrange jumpers by Adamos. It later grew to 73-60 on back-to-back conversions by Soberano to seal the win.
Jiovanni Jalalon top-scored with 14 points, while Kent Salado and Villoria chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Chiefs, which will face No. 3 seed Mapua Institute of Technology Cardinals in the semifinals./PN
