MANILA – San Beda College Red Lions turned to Davon Potts in the endgame to score a 65-60 win over Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers in the NCAA Season 93 men’s seniors basketball yesterday at the San Juan Arena.
Trailing 58-57 with over three minutes left in the game, Potts drained back-to-back triples to surge the Red Lions ahead at 62-57.
The Red Lions then turned to its defense to just limit the Heavy Bombers to three points.
Potts finished with 14 points, including four three-point conversions.
The Red Lions, which has tallied its 10th straight win, improved to 12-1 win-loss record behind the 13-0 Lyceum Pirates.
Jayvee Mocon led the way with 19 points, 15 rebounds and five assists, while Donald Tankoua contributed double-double 14 points and 13 rebounds for the defending champions.
The Red Lions waxed hot early in the game as it build a lead as high as 18 points at 28-10 on hits by Mocon and Tankoua, but Heavy Bombers turned things around in the second half behind the hot shooting of Jed Mendoza.
“It’s really our defense that helped us win this game, the worst thing that happened was we gave up 27 points in the third quarter,” said Red Lions head coach Boyet Fernandez. “Frankly, if we lost this game, the blame is on me.”
Mendoza finished with 16 points while Abdulrazak Abdulwahab added 11 points and nine rebounds for the Heavy Bombers, which fell to third place in the standings with 7-6 win-loss card.
In the second game, Arellano University Chiefs staved off a late run by Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals to escape with an 84-79 win. Chiefs has improved to 5-8 win-loss mark, while Generals slid down to 6-7.
