MANILA – San Beda Red Lionesses forged a three-way tie at the top-spot of the NCAA Season 92 women’s volleyball after a 29-27, 25-13, 25-14 win over Lyceum Lady Pirates at San Juan Arena.
Franchesca Racraquin led the way with 11 points, including eight attacks, for the Red Lionesses, which tied defending champion College of St. Benilde Lady Blazers and San Sebastian Lady Stags at the No. 1 spot with a 3-0 win-loss slate.
Nieza Viray chipped in with nine markers, with eight attacks, while twin sister Jiezela contributed seven for the Red Lionesses, which showed a lot of improvement compared to its 3-6 slate last season.
Racraquin and the Virays came up with huge plays at the latter part of the opening set when the Red Lionesses had to parry every challenge launched by the Lady Pirates to survive the set.
That heartbreaking first-set loss was enough to deflate the confidence of the Lady Pirates, which committed numerous errors the Red Lionesses took advantage of to score a sweep victory.
“Mini-minimize lang namin ang errors namin at mas tinitibayan sa depensa this season,” said Red Lionesses team skipper Becca Cuevas. “Pero madami pa kaming dapat ayusin.”
Cherilyn Sindayen and Christine Miralles finished with six points apiece to lead the way for the Lady Pirates, which suffered its first defeat this season after winning its first two assignments.
Meanwhile Arellano University Lady Pirates barged into the Magic 4 after it turned back Mapua Lady Cardinals, 25-17, 25-8, 18-25, 25-18, with team captain Rialen Sante and Mary Anne Esquerra spearheading the charge with 14 and 12 points.
It was the Lady Chiefs’ second win in three matches, which was good for a share of the No. 4 spot with the Lady Pirates and Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers./PN
