MANILA – San Beda University Red Lions moved closer to sweeping the NCAA Season 92 men’s basketball elimination after an 83-55 rout of Mapua University Cardinals at the San Juan Arena.
It improved to 16-0.
James Canlas posted double-double 16 points and 10 rebounds on Friday. Calvin Oftana drained five triples to finish with 15. Evan Nelle scattered 14 points, eight assists, three rebounds, and two steals.
“Every win, the target is really getting bigger. But I always tell my boys that don’t think about what’s in store after this, think about our next game,” said Red Lions head coach Boyet Fernandez.
Holding to a slim 15-13 lead after the opening period, the Red Lions went to work in the second period behind Canlas, Oftana and Nelle. They surged to a 10-point edge at the half.
The defending men’s seniors basketball champions continued the onslaught in the second half for a 59-37 third quarter lead before surging it to its largest at 28 points in the payoff period.
Noah Lugo paced the Cardinals with 14 points and 10 rebounds as they dropped to 7-8 win-loss slate, falling behind by 1.5 games to fourth-running San Sebastian College Golden Stags.
In the other match, Lyceum of the Philippines Pirates displayed its full arsenal in the fourth quarter to score a victory over the gutsy Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals./PN
