MANILA – Carlo Ceasar Peñalosa captured the WBA Asia South flyweight title via a third-round technical-knockout win against Jemsi Kibazange of Tanzania at the SM City North EDSA Skydome in Quezon City.

This was the third professional belt for Peñalosa, a native of San Carlos City, Negros Occidental. He already had the PBF light flyweight title and the WBC Asia Boxing Council Silver flyweight belt.

After testing each other in the opening round of the Sunday bout, Peñalosa took control of the match in Round 2 and managed to send Kibazange down the canvas with a flurry of punches.

Kibazange attempted to make his move early in the third round but Peñalosa did not let the opportunity slip him as he knocked his opponent down anew with a solid hit at the round’s 2:55 mark.

The 25-year-old Peñalosa saw an improved record of 13-1-0 (win-loss-draw) with six knockouts while Kibazange’s slate fell 11-3-2 with one stoppage victory.

Meanwhile Paolo Sy of Bacolod City eked out a unanimous-decision victory over fellow Negrense Alvin Tayo in their nontitle light flyweight match scheduled for six rounds.

In other results, former world champion Marlon Tapales scored a first-round stoppage win over Goodluck Mrema while WBA Interim bantamweight champion Reymart Gaballo finished off Julias Kisarawe in just one round./PN
