San Joaquin cop’s death: Probers focus on murder, suicide, accidental firing

ILOILO City – Police investigators are exploring three possible angles in the death of a police officer whose body was found on July 20 in Barangay Damilisan, Miag-ao, Iloilo.

Miag-ao’s Police Captain Marvin Buenavista said they have yet to conclude on the cause of death of 27-year-old Patrolman Marvin Del Castillo, a resident of Sara, Iloilo and assigned at the San Joaquin police station.

They were still waiting for the result of the paraffin test and ballistic examination.

Buenavista said they will also scrutinize the cellular phone of Del Castillo; this may help in the investigation.

There were speculations that Del Castillo killed himself because of his debts in online cockfighting.

Del Castillo was found in a forested area around 10:30 a.m. His service firearm, a .9mm pistol, was recovered beside him. A spent bullet shell was recovered in the area.

Del Castillo was last seen parking his motorcycle around 9 a.m. on Monday (July 19) near the area where his body was discovered.

Residents told the police they became suspicious when they saw the motorcycle still parked there the following day.

Del Castillo was stationed in San Joaquin for six months./PN
