San Jose mayor contracts coronavirus

SAN JOSE, Antique – Mayor Elmer Untaran here contracted SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

He underwent reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction test on July 15. The result was released the day after.

Untaran himself announced his infection on Friday, July 16, “with a sad heart.”

He stressed he had been exerting “extra efforts” to observe “maximum health protocols.”

Untaran assured his constituents they had nothing to worry about.

“I am asymptomatic and in stable condition but have subjected myself to strict isolation, with regular monitoring by our Municipal Health Personnel,” he stressed.  

The Office of the Mayor was temporarily closed on Friday for disinfection.

“This is a reminder to all that we are still in the middle of a pandemic,” said Untaran.

He reminded residents to “be extra careful, and keep on observing public health standards. Always maintain social distancing, proper hand washing, wearing of facemasks and face shield, and staying at home or avoiding non-essential travel outside your residences, to prevent COVID-19 transmission.”

As of July 14, San Jose had 109 active COVID-19 cases and a death toll of 32. The recovered cases, however, were high at 689.
