SAN JOSE, Antique – Muslim communities in this capital town strongly condemned the atrocities committed by the Maute group in Marawi City, a police official said.
They also offered their cooperation to maintain peace and order, during a recent dialogue with the municipal police, said Senior Superintendent Norby Escobar, police chief.
Barangay captains in Comon and San Fernando where Muslim communities reside were instructed to intensify monitoring of locals and register any newcomer.
The Muslim communities also vowed to report to the police anything that could disrupt peace and order, Escobar said.
According to Escobar, they “cannot discount” the possibility that some Muslims in this town were “related to the Maute group.”
Their Maute relatives “might opt to elude arrest, what with the massive operations of the police and the Armed Forces in Mindanao,” he said.
Police in the entire Antique province were on “full alert” considering the proximity of Visayas to Mindanao, said Escobar.
Officers were putting up checkpoints in strategic areas in San Jose and other parts of the province twice a day.
‘MARTIAL LAW OK’
Meanwhile Escobar favored the declaration of martial law in Mindanao.
President Rodrigo Duterte’s declaration was “necessary” until the situation in Marawi City gets “normalized,” Escobar said.
He also sympathized with the families of the soldiers and police officers who were killed during the fight against the Maute group.
“I know the President will not stop until justice is attained,” Escobar said. (PNA/PN)
