SAN JOSE, Antique – The municipal government of this capital town will strengthen the implementation of the solid waste management (SWM) program this 2019, with “no segregation, no collection” order as a first step.
Mayor Elmer Untaran on Wednesday said his administration has been addressing the traffic problem, economic development and the medical needs of his people since last year.
This year he will focus on the SWM program, he added.
“The missing link now is the SWM, which I want to focus on for the year,” Untaran said.
He added that ithere is now a nongovernment organization (NGO) that will be working with the local government unit on responsible collection of garbage.
“Our municipal dumpsite is now almost full so I gave instruction to the waste collectors that no segregation, no collection,” the mayor said.
Residents were advised to segregate their waste. Only those that could not be recycled or reused would be collected.
“There are waste that could even be made into organic fertilizer,” Untaran said.
He added that the local government unit is also acceding to the requests of the barangays for them to establish a material recovery facility and that they will be provided with a vehicle to collect wastes. (PNA/PN)
